Synopsis: A story about a bunch of underdogs who not only play Kabaddi passionately, but also get involved in crucial socio-economic issues.
The story centres on Vijay, a child whose village has been long deprived of water for irrigation. Vijay’s father threatens the bureaucracy with self-immolation if the village’s basic need for water is not fulfilled. To set an example, the father sets himself ablaze before the villagers and the media. As fate would have it, his sacrifice is forgotten and instead his family is affected. Vijay grows up with the dream that one day, he will come face to face with the bureaucracy with a simple request; that his village ‘Badlapur’ receives government’s attention to solve their water crisis.
Badlapur Boys is a 2014 Hindi drama film directed by Shailesh Verma and produced by A. Muthu and Salim Tanwar. It stars Nishan, Saranya Mohan, Annu Kapoor and Puja Gupta in lead roles. Ankit (Saurabh) Sharma Played the character of deenu in this film. The film is about a team of Kabaddi players in a family romantic drama with sports as a backdrop. It is a remake of the Tamil hit film Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu. Bollywood editor A. Muthu, who has edited more than 50 films (including Sadak, Deewana, Balwan, Raja Babu, Judwa, Ziddi, Haseena Maan Jayegi), took the remake rights of film Veenila Kabadi and produced this film.
Among the various players, the film predominantly focuses on the righteous Vijay (Nishan Nanaiah). Unlike the rest, he has a lot more to worry about, than winning the game. He must restore the respect his late father rightfully deserved, realise his dream of enabling sufficient water supply to his village and marry the girl (Saranya Mohan) he loves.
Since the lead actor has enough on his plate, him grappling with those multiple problems seems like a never-ending melodramatic journey, which is more tiring than inspiring. While it’s a relief to see a film based on Kabaddi and not cricket, we wish the execution was more authentic.
Instead of infusing ‘energy and courage’ into the film, something the sport strongly embodies, you end up watching a compilation of sob stories as each character recounts a tragic tale, which only distracts you from the core premise. The romantic track incorporates love songs featuring backup dancers, clad in ghagra-choli, doing the coordinated dance moves, something you saw in the 90s. If that’s not outdated enough, the protagonist’s sacrifice, anger, effort to reclaim his father’s lost honour etc seems too cliched and over-dramatic for your liking. Even the dialogues lack depth. For instance, Annu Kapoor’s pep talk as a coach, fails to evoke a reaction. The supposed villains sound comical. An animation scene showing a broken rib penetrating the heart is unintentionally funny!
